Yemen: Houthi Advance Near Bab el-Mandeb Raises Fresh Global Shipping Risk

Posted on 09/12/2026 By idmahamad sekh

Yemen’s latest fighting has moved closer to one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. Reuters reported on September 11 that Iran-aligned Houthi forces reached Perim Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait after taking the Red Sea port of Mocha and advancing along the coast. The development matters beyond Yemen because the strait links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is a major route for international trade and energy shipments.

What changed this week

Reuters reported that Yemeni government forces withdrew from Perim while Houthi forces also took the mainland coastal town of Dhubab, which faces the island. Earlier, the Houthis captured Mocha, a strategic port on Yemen’s western coast. AP separately reported that the advance has increased concerns about the security of the Bab el-Mandeb and the wider Red Sea shipping corridor.

The situation is still developing. Control of territory does not automatically mean that the entire shipping lane has been closed, and claims made by parties to the conflict should be distinguished from independently verified changes in maritime traffic.

Why Bab el-Mandeb matters

Bab el-Mandeb is the southern entrance to the Red Sea. Ships using the corridor can continue toward the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, making the route important for cargo between Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Reuters reported that the latest escalation has already added pressure to oil markets, with Brent crude trading above $100 a barrel during the wider regional crisis.

The humanitarian cost

The military developments are also creating a displacement emergency. Al Jazeera, citing United Nations data and the International Organization for Migration, reported on September 11 that more than 46,000 people had been displaced by the latest escalation, with the figure rising rapidly. IOM’s Yemen response plan says humanitarian operations are already constrained by funding shortages and a very large need for assistance.

For civilians, the immediate priorities are different from the strategic debate: safe routes out of fighting, food, water, shelter, medical care and reliable access for humanitarian agencies. The UN has called for humanitarian personnel and facilities to be protected.

What this means for global trade

  • Shipping: Higher security risks can lead carriers to avoid the Red Sea and take longer routes around southern Africa.
  • Energy: Additional disruption around major oil transit routes can increase price volatility.
  • Consumer costs: Longer voyages can raise freight, insurance and delivery costs for goods moving between Asia and Europe.
  • Humanitarian aid: Fighting and damaged transport links can make it harder to deliver assistance to displaced communities.

What to watch next

The key indicators are whether fighting spreads further along the coast, whether commercial shipping changes its routes, whether Saudi and Yemeni government forces mount a counteroffensive, and whether diplomatic efforts can prevent the conflict from returning to full-scale war.
