The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered an FIR over alleged allocation and diversion of rice under the Open Market Sale Scheme (Domestic), raising questions about how subsidised public grain was allocated, monitored and ultimately lifted.

The allocation

The case concerns 62,000 metric tonnes of rice allocated by the Food Corporation of India, Delhi Region, to the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Ltd. Reporting based on the FIR says about 50,645 MT was actually lifted at a concessional rate and the CBI alleges an estimated ₹28.87 crore loss to FCI.

What the CBI alleges

According to reporting on the FIR, NERAMAC sought rice under OMSS(D) saying it would help provide affordable rice to the general public, daily-wage earners, labourers and migrant workers in Delhi, including people outside the public distribution system.

Legal status
