India’s food regulator has proposed a red front-of-pack warning system for packaged foods high in sugar, salt or fat. The proposal is a policy change, but it is not yet a final nationwide rule.

On August 28, 2026, FSSAI placed a compliance affidavit before the Supreme Court proposing a red-coloured hexagonal front-of-pack warning with declarations including High Fat, High Sugar, High Salt and Highly Sweetened Beverage.

1. What are the final nutrient thresholds and measurement basis?
2. When does Phase I actually begin and what transition period will apply?
3. How will compliance be tested and enforced?

Why the packaging industry matters

Front-of-pack warnings can affect reformulation, packaging, advertising and consumer perception. Industry opposition is policy debate and should not be treated as evidence of wrongdoing.

What can be verified

As of September 2, FSSAI had proposed the red hexagonal system and described a phased approach. TruthWave cannot responsibly state that the labels are already mandatory nationwide.
