The Bombay High Court’s Nagpur bench has asked Maharashtra authorities what action was taken after an earlier inspection of the Nandgaon fly-ash disposal site.

What the court is investigating

The proceedings are a suo motu public-interest case. The court sought a response from the collector and details of action taken on the earlier inspection report. An amicus told the court that fly ash appeared vulnerable to being washed toward the Pench River during monsoon conditions.

Why the inspection report matters

The report can show the physical condition of the disposal area, containment arrangements, drainage routes and risks identified by officials. The High Court’s request makes the administration’s response part of the accountability trail.

The Pench River question

The court has not made a final finding that fly ash is entering the river. Evidence of a potential risk is not the same as proof of contamination.
