Maharashtra has ordered an inquiry into allegations that high-fee self-financed courses at government-run Sydenham College were operated through private entities using publicly funded campus infrastructure. The complaint also raises questions about whether regular aided programmes were reduced and how fee flows were governed.

What triggered the inquiry

Reports say the Higher Education Department formed a three-member committee chaired by Mumbai University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Ajay Bhamare and asked it to report within a week. The allegations concern self-financed programmes including Financial Technology and Luxury Brand and Retail Management.

The financial question

Reported fee levels are about ₹2.05 lakh for the FinTech programme and ₹3.08 lakh for the luxury-brand programme. The investigation should establish the total collections, contracts with private entities, use of campus facilities and allocation of revenue.
