Water infrastructure in India representing the Tamil Nadu government tender investigation

DVAC searched 30 locations across five Tamil Nadu cities on September 5, 2026 in a case concerning alleged irregularities in Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department tenders. The agency said it seized 241 documents and electronic evidence. The allegations remain under investigation and are not findings of guilt.

What happened

The searches covered Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur and included premises linked to former minister K.N. Nehru, relatives, contractors and others. The New Indian Express reported that the case followed Enforcement Directorate communications alleging manipulation of MAWS tenders.

The New Indian Express report says DVAC seized 241 documents and electronic evidence. The News Minute independently reported the 30-location operation and the FIR against Nehru and 12 others.

What the ₹1,020 crore allegation means

Reports cite an ED allegation that at least ₹1,020 crore was collected as bribes and commissions through alleged contract manipulation. That figure must not be presented as an established loss or as money proven to have been received by every person named.

The accountability questions are more concrete: which tenders were affected, how bidders were evaluated, whether specifications changed, who approved awards, whether competing bids were genuine, and whether payments matched contracted work.

Why the documents matter

Tender files, comparative statements, technical evaluations, work orders, invoices, payment records and electronic communications can establish whether procurement was routine or manipulated. The seized material therefore matters more than political claims made after the searches.

What happens next

  • Investigators need to identify the specific tenders and transactions.
  • The evidentiary basis for the reported ₹1,020 crore figure should be disclosed through the legal process.
  • Any arrests or chargesheets should be assessed against the documentary record.
  • The courts may determine whether the investigation can proceed and under what safeguards.
