India’s power system is reaching an awkward stage of the energy transition: electricity demand is rising and solar capacity is expanding, yet a significant amount of available solar generation cannot be delivered to consumers.

The curtailment problem

New analysis reported on September 2 said nearly 11 terawatt-hours of solar generation had been curtailed over the previous 15 months, enough to supply roughly 10 million homes, because of transmission, storage and system-flexibility constraints.

The paradox

The issue is not simply a shortage of electricity. Solar output can be abundant when the grid cannot absorb or move all of it. Generators are then instructed to reduce output even though the resource is available.

What needs investigation

• Where is curtailment concentrated?
• Which transmission constraints cause the largest losses?
• How much storage is available during peak solar periods?
• What market or grid reforms could reduce avoidable curtailment?

Why it matters

Wasted available generation reduces the value of new renewable capacity and can weaken incentives for future investment unless grid planning keeps pace.
